The German Historical Institute London (GHIL) is an academically independent institution and part of the Max Weber Foundation German Humanities Institutes Abroad. It promotes research on medieval and modern history, in particular on the comparative history of Britain and Germany, on the British Empire  and the Commonwealth, and on Anglo-German relations. Its public library specializes in German history.

 

 

Symposium and Exhibition
 

The Insititute hosted a one-day symposium on 31.October 2014, as well as an exhibition which ran for five months. This coincided with the twenty-fifth aniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The symposium and exhibition explored ideas around representations of East German history and identity as well as sharing membories of the night the Berlin Wall was opened on November 9th 1989.
